Mark Rothko's colorful and shimmering paintings revitalized abstract art and made him one of the most important artists of the last century. With close to 80 works, the exhibition in the National Museum will be the first major presentation of Rothko in the Nordic region.
Painting or drawing?
Tragedy, grief, ecstasy and joy were some of the themes Rothko tried to express. He became best known for his towering, abstract paintings on large canvases. Less well known is that he also painted approximately 1,000 works on paper.
The paintings on paper challenge established notions of what is and is not painting, and show a side of Rothko’s artistry that has only recently received more attention. The motifs range from landscapes, portraits and surrealist projects to his characteristic, rectangular color fields.
