Anna Tahkola’s exhibition solid rock, my love takes the viewer into the middle of the essence and time of the rocks in a multi-sensory way. In the B-gallery space, you can see a body of work, which consists of a 300 x 750 cm pencil drawing spread over two walls, three-dimensional color studies, texts and Jyri Pirinen’s sound work heavy sleep of the Bedrock (2022).
The name of the exhibition, solid rock, my love, refers to the solid permanence of bedrock and the human need for permanence while questioning it. Thinking about the relativity of time and permanence slips a person into a dreamy and relaxed fold of time. At the same time, it allows other species, past and future entities to breathe the shared space as an evasive presence.
The starting point of the exhibition is the time spent with the coastal cliffs of Åland and the Turku archipelago. The work mixes the shapes, colors and aesthetics of the surface vegetation of Strömman Skrapnätö, Geta and Mossala granites. The rock motifs in the drawing are organically soft, flowing, flowing and compressible. Drawing is formed by mixing knowledge and bodily experience into visual thinking.
Granite is the most common type of stone in the world, but it is stunning in its essence. The birth of ordinary granite 1,900 million years ago deep in the earth’s crust draws temporal and spatial dimensions incomprehensible to humans. Visually, the constantly changing shapes, colors and surfaces of the rocks have a strong affective effect on those who pass by them.
Jyri Pirinen’s ambient sound work heavy sleep of the Bedrock brings a meditative and body-stimulating soundscape to the space of the work.
