Accelerator presents the Brussels-based artist and choreographer Nikima Jagudajev’s first exhibition in Sweden, with the work B asically . In his work, Jagudaev looks at social relations based on spatial relations and how we come together in meaningful and considerate ways. She describes her practice as prefigurative, which is a sociological term that means practicing one’s beliefs and ideals through a kind of collective and equal doing and being. Inspired by playful ways in which students can revolutionize the education system, Jagudayev has developed what he calls a work of “re-schooling”. Some of the most creative and intimate acts of our early education, such as self-organized play, gossip, flirting, and the passing of notes, occurred outside the curriculum but within the institution. Basically is an ongoing live project where the exhibition is a hybrid of production site, residence, school yard – a context where you can practice and perform.
At Accelerator, visitors become involved in an open game just by being in the room. A group of almost twenty artists, dancers and musicians enforce the rules of the game and draw the audience in in visible and invisible ways. In different formations and phases, they shape the room with elements such as live music, food, a mysterious deck of cards called POWDER , sewing on the work’s clothing collection Arcane Clothing , oracles in still life form, non-linear choreographies and unplanned time that leaves room for unforeseen events. The work is governed by the formal rules of the game as well as by the subjective interpretations that arise in the interaction with and between the participating artists and visitors. In Basically, the ongoing creation and re-creation of the room is central.
Since 2020, Basically has taken different forms and gestures, like a prolonged performance on a beach or like a vinyl record. The work grows through accumulation and ramifications. Accelerator features the longest version of Basically to date. You encounter a moment captured in a long-lasting and long-term mega-work. There is a synchronistic aspect to the exhibition as it is structured in cycles throughout the exhibition period. Depending on when you visit the exhibition, you will experience high or low intensity phases of the work. Different aspects of Basically are activated at different times. Visitors are invited to experience how the work’s characters create the world of Basically – and to become part of this role-playing game in an open world. You come and go as you please, the work has no clear begnning or end. We recommend that you stay a while!
