During the planning of the exhibition, Minna Miettillä had an undefined desire to work with textiles. He had obtained scraps of fabric from flea markets; perhaps leftovers from an unfinished sewing project, another unfinished sewing project, and oddly shaped curtains. In addition, the study had miscellaneous materials, some of which may have been included in his previous works. He no longer remembered what was surplus and what was recycled. Then some of her relatives gave her more materials, home textiles and more. They seemed difficult to use, they had too many too intimate meanings. But he used them too. For some reason it seemed like the only option.
Sometimes he would sit for amazingly long periods of time untangling tangled fishing line. It felt important. It was important not to try to understand anything, just be and do what you did. Sometimes Maaria called, and they talked. Some art, mostly life.
It is part of the nature of Maaria Wirkkala’s work that certain elements pass from one work to another, changing their nature according to time and space and situation. For the Duo exhibition, he decided to bring a collection of works, Fragile . In his previous gallery exhibition LIITUTALO (Galleria Sculptor, 1986) in Finland, the gallery’s floor plan made on squared paper served as the list of works, which included: entrance hall , library, attic and basement . Now the bill of lading serves as the bill of lading.
The dialogue with Minna Miettilä was a kind of mirror for Maaria Wirkkala, in which not only the present but also her own past was reflected. Each work is a moment in a long chain. In this Duo joint exhibition, the chains of two artists cross or at least run side by side for a while.
