Dimitris Makrygiannakis (born 1979) works as a senior physician in rheumatology at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. After a series of events in 2010, he discovered artistic photography, was captivated, and since then photography has been an important part of his life. He started with street photography but today takes pictures of everything that he thinks has artistic value.
Makrygiannakis is the first recipient of the Lars Tunbjörk Prize who has a background other than being active as a professional photographer.
In the current exhibition, Makrygiannakis presents glimpses of the world that interests him and also delves further into the possibilities of photography by creating diptychs. He doesn’t just want to show the events themselves, but also highlight further meanings that spur the viewer to think.
Makrygiannakis is a member of the international photography collective “Burn My Eye” and in 2013 he won the first prize in “Invisible Photographer Asia”, one of the biggest competitions for street photography in Asia. He has participated in several exhibitions worldwide such as “Head On Photo Festival”, Australia, “Miami Street Photography Festival”, USA and “Thessaloniki Photo Festival”, Greece. He has lectured at festivals and also led workshops in street photography. He is currently in the process of self-publishing his first book, entitled “Rodina”.
The prize was established by Tore G Wärenstam’s Foundation in Borås and is awarded in collaboration with Lars Tunbjörk’s Foundation, to a photographer who works in the spirit of Lars Tunbjörk.
