The Inspire Art Award is initiated by PRIO (The Peace Research Institute Oslo) in collaboration with Nitja center for contemporary art and several international actors, and springs from Inspire, a research project under PRIO. The intention of the project is to highlight artists who link their own experiences from violence and war to artistic practices, and to connect these artists together across nationality and geography. The project is international and cross-artistic, and includes visual art, dance and film.
The five artists who will be presented in Nitja in the spring of 2024 have been selected following an international open call in 2022, where artists across media and expression, and with experiences from war, conflict and political violence could apply. Among a large number of applicants, Zahrasadat Hakim, Eyoeal Kefyalew, Zun May Oo, Daria Pugachova and Gervais Tomadiatunga were nominated, and they will all develop new works for the exhibition. The artists work with various media, including social projects, textiles, photography, figure theatre, performance and contemporary dance. Common to their different practices, however, are experiences related to war and violent conflict, and how this can be thematized and treated through art is a common denominator.
