Endlessly shaped by its surroundings, an echo’s call can appear autonomous and yet is wholly dependent on its source. At times this link is clearly recognized, but in other moments the echo and its origin remain unheard. The sound simply resonates, leaving a residual atmosphere. The now hollowed out forms, emptied of context, leave a kind of silhouette, like a threshold or a mask, showing the boundaries or edges of an object or event that is missing its centre.
echo_____locations is an attempt to use the echo as an act of refusal. The refusal to ground these works in their place of origin. What happens in the gap between the story and its echo? If bats use echolocation to see their environment, what do these echoes tell us, what does a landscape of echoes look like? and how are they now shaping us rather than us shaping them?
The exhibition will feature an installation of works, including looped projections (both digital and analogue), sound and a comic book.
