She herself says: The peace of mind it brings when I sit at the loom, the slow work with the thread, looking at the shapes and colors in nature, following the seasons. Winter – white and dark, the bright colors of spring, the lush forms of summer and the splendor of autumn’s colours. Feeling the sensation of something forming between my fingers.
Randi Bjerkås Lyngra has a studio at home in Hyggen, in a room with windows on three sides and a view to the south over Drammensfjorden. She weaves the tapestries from the images in her head, without cardboard, so that she only sees a section of the entire work at all times. This can lead to some surprises when the finished tapestry is cut down after two or three months of work. The tapestry may have disturbing «noises» that need to be changed or removed. Parts of the weft may have to be removed, or she may have to adjust the timbre with a bit of embroidery to make everything harmonize.
In the exhibition at SOFT gallery, Randi shows three new works. One of them, Vår i Vesterålen (Spring in Vesterålen), consists of two carpets measuring 117 x 227 cm. In the 1970s, Randi lived with her family in Harstad. There she experienced the intense yellow-green colors in the spring when nature woke up, and since then she has longed for the north every spring. In 2022, she was there at exactly the right time. The deciduous trees got new leaves, the birds came and the air was full of song. Randi saw and heard images everywhere. Another work, The Silk Road (106 x 228 cm) is woven with red warp. The warp is an important part of the visual expression together with the unspun silk, and the «sounds» from the silk are like echoes in the red.
