Per Stenius (1922–2014) first received renown at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s as a representative of a dynamic new generation of artists. Exploring the interplay between the figurative and the abstract, Stenius came to be known as a preeminent Finnish modernist.

Stenius withdrew from the public eye at an early stage, however, and travelled extensively. His absences from the country and shying away from publicity resulted in Stenius remaining relatively unknown as an artist, despite his long career and popularity among collectors.
