How we humans feel is deeply connected to the prevailing state of society and the world. Physical, psychological or spiritual states of individuals can no longer be understood as isolated from the state of the social body, ecosystems and economic systems. Rather, our personal well-being is largely to be seen as a consequence of the culture we live in. Its structural injustices and our individual living conditions are intertwined.

Ruben Wätte’s exhibition “The situation then?” revolves around a kind of artistic investigation of the situation right now, starting from the adjustment required by now living generations to meet the self-destructive crescendo of crisis capitalism in the form of the ongoing collapse of the climate and the dismantling of social safety nets. It is about a revolutionary change that does not only need to take place in global political governing documents and in the individual’s consumption and travel patterns. Rather, it needs to take place for the most part in our subjective and collective world view, as well as in how we humans choose to relate to ourselves, to each other and to a gradually increasing existential uncertainty.
