I aim for a primitive style and work in the simplest possible way. I create sculptures using the coiling technique and only my fingers. I use stones and sticks to create patterns on the surface of the clay. The shapes are based on those found in nature and created by focusing on the essence of the clay.
The works deal with my inner world and an understanding of the different levels of humanity, also the mysterious and inexplicable aspects of life. The exhibition also gives praise to the entire ecosystem where even the smallest organisms are amazing and important. I hope that the exhibition arouses visitors’ curiosity and opens up their senses so that they are able to observe nature more closely and find different levels in the environment. As a counterbalance to our daily lives filled with technology, I offer a connection to nature and a calming element.
The theme of acceptance is also strongly present in the exhibition. We have bumps, cracks and dents as signs of the lives we have lived. Perfection is rarely interesting, and I see beauty in imperfection.”
Henriikka Leppänen is a ceramic artist and designer from North Karelia. She is from Tohmajärvi and works in both Joensuu and Rääkkylä. She creates her works using materials she has collected, such as natural clay, wood ash and stone powder.
She is inspired by all kinds of small strange-looking plants and organisms. In the forest, she explores the textures of tree trunks, moss, lichen and small mushrooms and is fascinated by the miniature world of the undergrowth.
Henriikka has a deep connection to clay as material – it has expressive power and working it is very therapeutic. She also has a strong relationship with nature and has enjoyed getting messy in the mud and playing with clay ever since she was a child. Clay is an element that balances the rich inner world of a sensitive person and the feeling of having one’s head in the clouds. Above all, clay is a medium that allows Henriikka to make her inner world visible. She feels better when she is able to create, experiment, explore and do things and learn from her mistakes.
