Aguilar Caballero works with an idea she calls “Containers of Time”. She describes the time containers as mechanisms that preserve memories. In this exhibition, they take the form of a series of reduction woodcuts. These two-dimensional prints have been folded and shaped by Aguilar Caballero into three-dimensional paper houses – each house with its own associated story. If you go close to the houses, you can look in through windows, doors and secret entrances where magical landscapes and dreamy scenes are revealed. The paper houses are like open invitations into Aguilar Caballero’s childhood stories and memories.
Scenographic art
The time containers are graphic multimedia installations that transform the gallery space into something reminiscent of a theater stage. The houses are lit from within, their warm glow interacting with a series of animations projected onto the walls, similar to a shadow play of symbolic figures. The mysterious mood the artist creates is supported by a complementary soundscape by the Mexican composer Arturo Morfín. The result is a unified scenography that connects the exhibition’s various narratives. You Set the Scene welcomes the public into the houses as guests and at the same time allows them to become actors on stage.
