Since 1975, textile artist Sonja Berlin has persistently challenged the boundaries of tray weaving. In addition to her own artistic practice, she has spread knowledge of this historical tradition as a course leader and author. Her passionate work has been crucial to the survival and contemporary development of the technique worldwide.
Berlin has taught from preschool to university level, been a course leader for various study associations and handicraft consultants, and has been a recurring guest teacher at the Handarbetets vänners skola and other higher textile educations. She has participated in around twenty solo and group exhibitions, including at Kalmar County Museum, Liljevalchs in Stockholm and Raulands Kunstmuseum. In 2006 she received a master’s degree in traditional art from Telemark University College, Norway.
In the exhibition Threads and Thoughts – 50 Years of Tray Weaving with Sonja Berlin, we encounter the many expressions of contemporary tray weaving – from narrow ribbons to three-dimensional constructions.
