Objects and buildings go through constant change. They age, get dirty and break. Maintaining and repairing things is an active activity that speaks of our values. What kind of objects and things do we spend time and money on taking care of? And what is left outside of care?
Maintenance-related work often takes place out of sight. The FIX exhibition puts everyday chores in the center of wonder. Examples from the fields of architecture and design have been selected for the exhibition, and four new works of contemporary art have been commissioned. In their works, contemporary artists reflect on our relationship with dirt, power and the choices we consider everyday.
The exhibition architecture created by designer Lauri Johansson with its plasterboard also refers to the ongoing renovation. It reminds us that our shared world is never finished, but needs constant renovation. The public can also think about issues related to repair, cleaning and maintenance, and participate in the events wrapped around the exhibition.
The exhibition has been curated by the Architecture Museum and Design Museum’s working group Kaisa Karvinen, Sara Martikainen, Jutta Tynkkynen, Jemina Vainikka Lindholm and Hanna Kapanen. Designer Lauri Johansson is responsible for the exhibition architecture.
