Lilybeth Sebaldus works with both painting and installation. Her works stem from a desire to create a breathing hole of presence and poetry. Despite the works’ appearance of playfulness and lightness, undertones of longing and melancholy are hidden behind the humor.
The artist’s paintings, which are often a mixture of acrylic and oil, are abstract and seem far from our familiar external reality. You often sense a spaciousness in the images that can lead the mind to desolate landscapes. The landscapes are inhabited by different forms and contain traces of the creation process itself. In other words, there is no intention to create an illusion of reality, on the contrary. The motifs are also inspired by the artist’s own experiences and appear as raw evocations of her inner landscapes.
The installations and objects are both sensual and full of associations. Sebaldus usually uses everyday materials from e.g. hardware stores and found objects, which in the usual sense are considered obsolete. In Sebaldus’s hands, the found is broken down and transformed and something new emerges. The works are both an investigation of different materials and the new stories that can be brought to life in both artist and viewer.
