Samppa Törmälehto’s highly anticipated solo exhibition in Helsinki presents a sovereign painter. Törmälehto has retained his style, but his painting methods have become richer and his confidence in pure colour has grown stronger. A simplified composition brings the subject of the works to the fore and small details build a narrative around it. In the large-scale paintings, the varied treatment of the surface and the intrinsic glow are magnificently accentuated.
