For 20 years, Sørlandets Kunstmuseum has housed the old cathedral school, also known as “Katta”. One of the first works the newly founded museum bought in 1996 was the sculpture Maisengel by the artist Irene Nordli. But now we are on the move, and fittingly enough, the angel with his corn cob wings will fly to his new home, Kunstsilo .
“Sørlandets Kunstmuseum is currently opening a new exhibition that tells the museum’s more than 20 years of history, and at the same time gives us a glimpse into the future.” Read Jan Henrik Munksgaard’s article in FVN.
In this exhibition, Sørlandets Kunstmuseum invites the public to say a final goodbye to an era in the museum’s history. The history of SKMU contains many stories, and not least several art collections. As early as 1995, the museum was founded to preserve the unique collection of the former Christiansands Picture Gallery. The strong craft environment in Sørlandet, especially in Kristiansand and Risør in the 70s, has also become an important part of our history. To build our own collection which consists of both visual art and craft has been an important task, which has led the museum has acquired the art of both regional and national artisans and billedkunstn ers .
Treasures from the art museum’s collections are retrieved, presented together with stories and other highlights from the last twenty years. Here you can experience everything from the classic painters from Sørlandet such as Amaldus Nielsen , Olaf Isaachsen and Alfred Emil Andersen , Beat art by Leo Valledor and Richard Kiggins , to the highlight of the collection with works by Kjell Nupen, Else Marie Jakobsen, Irene Nordli and Elisabeth Haarr . You can also get acquainted with new purchases for the collection that have not previously been shown at the museum , such as Marte Gunnufsen’s video work “ Metamorphosis ” . It is memorable reunion as well as totally new experiences of art – not to mention the voltage in the face of a new era , e n n y s a m l of n g and a new art museum, K u n s t s in l o .
