Hanne-May Scheen's paintings are built up of layers of transparent acrylic paint on coarse canvas or MDF boards. The thin and overlapping layers create and highlight new forms and fields of tension in the compositions. The surfaces can tell something about underlying motives such as observations from nature or human experiences. The style is abstract, but with hints of recognizable shapes, ornaments and impulses from folk art. The material surface and the directions in the intersecting brushstrokes can give associations to warp and weft in a woven textile. With the help of a few selected pigments, a spectrum of related colors is mixed - which creates space and movement in the picture surface.
Scheen has a background in both the textile department and the graphics department at the School of Arts and Crafts in Oslo and the Western Academy of Performing Arts in Australia. For the past 20 years, she has immersed herself in painting. In previous exhibitions, Scheen has worked with maps, architectural elements and spaces in landscapes. This time the research goes inwards and she abstracts a sense of reality. Through the paintings moods, meetings, recognition, experiences and expectations of what is to come are conveyed.
This is Scheen’s ninth solo exhibition at Galleri Semmingsen. She has been in the stable since the beginning and is a solid artist who constantly delivers new series with exciting themes and unexpected moves. Scheen has carried out decoration assignments for e.g. Sas Gardemoen, Hasflund Conference Centre, EDB Head Office, Hotel Continental, the Centra Group and countless Cruise Ships.
