“Statolit” was presented for the first time at Galleri Mejan in Stockholm in 2018 and is part of Moderna Museet’s collection. Adèle Essle Zeiss uses simple materials – three long wooden planks are placed horizontally in the room, on each of which a cement sack is placed, secured with elastic bands. On the other side of the plank sits a dancer, the weight of the body is balanced against the sack which forms a counterweight. A small movement changes the height of the plank and affects the movement.
Adèle Essle Zeiss asks the question “Where do we perceive the boundary between movement and stillness?” and continues: “The dancers’ task is to sit still, but from time to time perform a controlled joint movement upwards or downwards. The planks act as an amplifier. They magnify small movements in the dancers’ bodies and carry them further out into the room.”
The installation and documentation will be on display throughout the exhibition period.
