Tyra Kleen (1874–1951) was an artist, spiritualist, and world traveler who, in the early 20th century, broke free from conventions and created her own path. Her search for the unknown led her into occult circles, where she developed a symbolist artistic expression that broke with the societal, religious, and social norms of her time. In both her art and her writing, a driving force to challenge and explore boundaries can be discerned.
But Tyra Kleen didn’t just make inner journeys. Her passion for dance led her to countries like India, Java and Bali. There she settled for several years and documented the traditional dances. With her camera she captured the vibrant expressions and movements.
