ASSATA is a curated library and publishing house. They specialize in the works of revolutionary writers, with a central focus on decolonization and the critical examination of society and culture. Their work seeks to amplify radical voices from the global majority and promote study, community building and dialogue.
ASSATA’s collection, which includes over 500 books, is open to be read and borrowed. Beyond the library, they actively organize reading groups, study groups, film screenings, poetry evenings, lectures, discussions and workshops in collaboration with their mates.
The library is named in honor of Assata Shakur, a revolutionary and former member of the Black Liberation Army. Founded in Oslo in 2021 by Piniel Demisse, Neslihan Ramzi, Garima Singh and Sigrid Tviberg, ASSATA aims to promote both learning and engagement. This unique presentation by ASSATA is a collaborative project with Jelsen Lee Innocent , a Haitian-American artist based in Norway.
The exhibition includes artworks by Alma Habbal, Birhana Mehari, Dina Al-Makhrami, Flexi Aukan, Hanan Seid, Ndanzi George Ochieng, Mohamed Bashir and Rafael Schlaepfer.
In addition to the artwork, the exhibition also consists of hand-selected carpets from the Sense of Style store . The selection is curated by Nasim Mashak and for sale.
