Placed is an exhibition by MA student Jason Dunne, relating to nature, site, Irish folklore and historical architecture. Dunne uses Hordaland Kunstsenter’s gallery space as a starting point for developing an immersive, site-specific installation, consisting of paintings, sculpture and sound.
The sculptures are assembled from materials the artist has found and chosen throughout Bergen city – such as broken tree limbs, and lost footballs. A long-duration sound work has been made specifically for the exhibition space at Hordaland Kunstsenter, using frequencies which resonate with the physical dimensions of the space: frequencies that are made to physically fill the length, width and height of the gallery, with the composition gradually altering throughout the art centre’s opening hours. Large scale oil paintings in colours that correspond to the frequency of each tone of sound, complete the installation. The careful placement of each object in the space is guided by the resonance of the sound composition.
The artist carries with him his experiences as a person living in Ireland and Bergen, and his research into the history and folklore of his country. Through his personal lens he examines the culture he comes from, the city he lives in, and the gallery space he is showing in.
Jason Dunne is an artist from Galway, Ireland. His work is a combination of documentations of everyday life, glimpses of other possible worlds, both utopian and dystopian, and investigations into nature, folklore, spacial interaction and ambience. Jason works predominantly with painting, sound and installation. He works both individually and collaboratively, having worked in groups on sound art projects, publications, exhibitions, talks, and paintings.
