Heidi Marie Wien explores the meeting between nature and culture, and how man-made elements interact in the landscape. At fixed times each week, she visits the local area around Østensjøvannet in Oslo, where she studies and documents lost objects, natural vegetation and variations in the seasons. She further develops the observations on the sketch table and then on white-ground canvas. Simplification of form, strokes, sensuality, light and rhythm is central to the image structure. Wien describes varying structures and shapes in the wetland’s grass and reed vegetation with light and precise strokes. Negative spaces are emphasized and abstracted so that they appear foreign and recognizable at the same time. The concrete and abstract forms break with each other, and slide into each other, in an intuitive and direct design language.
Wien is educated at the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts. In the past, she has, among other things, had a solo exhibition at LNM in Oslo, project room Carl Berner, Peder Balke center and Galleri Fimbul. She has carried out art projects at the Central Hospital in Telemark and the Mid-Norway Hospital. In recent years, she has also collaborated with visual artist Kine Lillestrøm. They have had duo exhibitions at e.g. Østfold Kunstnersenter, Gallery BOA, LNM and F15 in Moss. In 2015, they carried out murals at Veitvet children’s and youth school in Oslo.
