The exhibition seeks to highlight the role of colour in our process of “reading” – of both graphic and physical space. The metaphor “reading as visually walking” aligns our visual experience of both spaces, what if we treat the way our eyes move across a page as walking visually? And the way we navigate around the city is like reading a living book, with facades like giant colour pages, guiding our movement.
The neighbourhoods included in the exhibition are Punavuori, Taka-Töölö, Kannelmäki, and Pikku-Huopalahti. These colour visualisations are documented in her book “Colourspace,” which was created as part of Aziza Hau-Lok Lo’s master’s thesis of Visual Communication Design at Aalto University, Colourspace is a concept of seeing colours holistically as a space instead of individual entities, and the three groups of visualisations embody three common narrative elements: sequence, action, and motion.
Aziza Hau-Lok Lo is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Helsinki, originally from Hong Kong. With a background in literature, her designs often explore ways of creative storytelling, to write with shapes and colours. She loves working with printed matter and tactile things, blending fantasy with her everyday observations. A playful palette, organic lines, and imaginative landscapes are a signature of her artistic style. The book “Colourspace” was shortlisted for the Young Creatives category in the Vuoden Huiput 2023 competition, and it was featured in Arkkitehti – Finnish Architectural Review in their 2024/4 Issue.
