The clothing designer Edda Gimnes (b. 1991) has developed a distinctive signature, characterized by a playful line in combination with an exploratory sense of form. She is concerned with the procedural and conceptual in the development phase, and as a contrast to perfectionism, she draws with her left hand to create a naive and graphic expression.
In Edda Gimnes’s creations, the overall presentation is central. Hats, bags, shoes and other details form part of a total experience, and the creations can be considered “walking works of art”. Her creations have fascinated the entire fashion world, and she has dressed artists such as Lady Gaga, Anitta and Cardi B, among others.
Despite his young age, Gimnes can point to an extensive and international career. Already in 2016, she was referred to in the New York Times as “a design burgeon to keep an eye on”, and in 2018 she was the first Norwegian to be nominated for the prestigious LVHM award, which entailed a display at Paris Fashion Week. Gimnes also participated in the exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion shown in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and she has been purchased by, among others, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg. Gimnes has also been purchased by the National Museum, where her creations are displayed in the newly opened museum as part of the collection exhibition.
When Edda Gimnes takes Nitja in spring 2023, this will be her first solo exhibition. In the exhibition, parallels are drawn between drawing and form, inspiration and final work, and visitors can experience the artist’s sketchbooks side by side with the outfits. The exhibition will present older signature works in combination with new creations.
