Julia Avén (b. 1997, Lahti, Finland) is a contemporary artist and painter based between Finland and Spain. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts and Culture from the Arts Academy of Turku University of Applied Sciences, where she specialized in Painting and Contemporary Practices. She also studied at the Universitat Politècnica de València. Her professional practice includes studies in Artistic Production and Management at the University of Murcia.
Avén’s practice explores the interplay between light, matter, and space, focusing on the relational dimension of place and the condition of reception in contemporary art. While her earlier work, such as Blue n. 1, utilized expressive methods like action painting, her current focus is on creating immersive, site-specific installations. These multilayered works investigate how abstract art is critically dependent on its resonance with the exhibition space (site-specificity), requiring the spectator’s physical movement to complete and define the artwork.
