Memory change and its representation using a changing material. Unpredictability, the importance of touch, exploration and domestication are all part of my work. In my latest body of work, I explored the ability to remember, to retrieve memories from a particular time. This was made possible by the material I used – crude oil, which served as a sensual tool to evoke nostalgia. I was reminiscing about a time when I lived with a relative who worked in an oil refinery. Mostly I painted the motifs from memory, searching extensively for the most suitable variant for the painting in sketches. Continuing my research, I continue to use the unconventional medium, which fascinates with its spectrum of colour, textures and multi-layering. By painting with crude oil, I also achieve a conceptual charging of the canvas, not through the image, but through the material of choice. By abandoning the picture plane, I discover a new problem – the transformation of the picture into an object. I charge the canvas not only through the image, but also through the change of paint, thus addressing the issues of the plasticity of the medium, and rethinking the critical aspect inherent in painting: the context of paint.
