What Goes Around, 2025

100 x 100 cm

Super 8mm film, 3x 8mm analog projectors, 3x camera tripod installation with bicycle wheels What Goes Around is a three channel film installation using Super 8mm film loops. The projection shows footage filmed during a three-week bicycle trip from Tallinn to Riga on the coastal line and western Estonian archipelago, in September 2024. Film is looping between a projector and a bicycle wheel, which acts like a film spool – as the projector is pulling the film, the result is created friction which in return turns the bicycle wheels. The film was self developed and manually edited during the month-long artist residency in the Baltic Analog Lab, Riga, Latvia. Official exhibition text: Both watching moving images and riding a bicycle require wheels to turn. The operational mechanism of film projectors mirrors that of a bicycle – both depend on systems of cranks, sprockets, axles, chains, and gears, and their precise synchronisation in order to produce movement. As one rides a bike, holding a camera, and thinks about moving road and moving frames, the landscape rushing by at the speed of turning wheels or frames per second, operating two machines that are essentially alike, endless parallels and unexpected links between the two come to mind. The Super 8 film installation shows footage filmed during a three-week cycling trip from Tallinn to Riga, along the coastline and the western Estonian archipelago, in September 2024.
