“Tavern” is one of the 16 images created in peat in my composition “Dictionary”, which reflect hidden symbols, my associations with old Latvian words, the meaning of which is largely unknown to the public. The association formed in the peat acts as a semiotic mechanism that invites the viewer to introspection. The associations reveal structures of culture, language, thought, perception. The assignment of meaning to abstract concepts is linked to different referents, which are linguistic, figurative, metaphorical and analogical associations. Word associations reflect mental lexis. My images in the Dictionary are like identity signs, indicating my belonging to Latvia.
