Ritual, 2026

200 x 100 x 1 cm

Handwoven cotton fabric, ceramic bowl, loom parts and water.

It all began with the idea that I was not ready yet. That time was slipping by so fast that I couldn’t catch up. So, I attempted to capture the moment of departure in a physical form. This need manifested itself in the form of a ritual. A ritual of passage to be precise. Rites of passage usually consist of three stages. As did this one. Before leaving the exhibition, I asked the audience to leave all their unnecessary belongings in the coat rack and wash their hands thrice in the bowl. After which they would dry their hands in the fabric, leaving a mark of their existence in my art. In rites of passage, we are stripped of our existing responsibilities to be made anew. But in between we are nothing. We are on a threshold of something. Almost sacred and I wanted to capture the presence of these liminal creatures in the fabric. So the moment would last forever.
