“Masterclass” is a composition consisting of nine emoji-graphic miniatures designed for a music ensemble performance. The piece continues (and breaks) the tradition of graphic music by abandoning the classical notation commonly used to indicate the pitch of sounds. The music is written with new graphic symbols that are intended not only for the performers to read but also for the audience to follow the score and interpret it in their own way. The title “Masterclass” was inspired by the attempts of corporations, organizations, and influencers to adapt to the new language of communication and strategically use emojis to increase user engagement and sales through colors, symbols, and ornaments. This title is also an allusion to online learning platforms and the growing popularity of video courses and their instructors.
