This painting is a part of series of works “HOMES”. Fragment of Riga’s cityscape depicts not the kind of scene when one hears phrase “Riga cityscape”. Usually it will be either Old Riga, or Art Nouveau district or other well known tourist landmarks. But in this case it’s the well known to post Soviet era citizens – blockhouse building neighbourhood. With those Latvia and Riga specifically is quite loaded with. Not your average postcard view yet it still gives a warm comfort and strong emotional connection to LOTS of locals. Call it beautiful or ugly but it is pa part of my and many of my countryman history and it shouldn’t be ignored. Official period of operation for most of these structures has expired and one can only wonder about their near future. But as for now, I want to document them as they are, as I see them. Calmness and simplicity are not to be undervalued.
