This painting continues where the first leaves off, grounded in the same idea: Kierkegaard’s leap of faith, the trust placed in something that can’t be rationally proven. It’s central image is a figure falling, carried rather than dropped. The fall isn’t read as defeat but as a transformation – the figure seems to fall upward, toward the unknown, giving up full control and trusting what it has no way to verify. That trust becomes its own kind of salvation, overcoming despair from within, rather than escaping it. As elsewhere in the series, the religious undertone isn’t dogmatic; the imagery works as an existential symbol for vulnerability and surrender rather than an illustration of belief itself. The painting’s atmosphere, its shifting color and loosely resolved forms, owes something to Edvard Munch’s way of using color and symbolic motifs to picture psychological states that can’t be observed directly – fear, uncertainty, acceptance – rather than depicting a scene. Like the first, it was built intuitively, without a predetermined outcome.
