oil paint and hematein on linen
“A life as it is now is not what it was. And never will be again.” is a painting triptych that combines traditional oil paints and hematein. In this work, hematein, a colourant used in histological tissue staining to make cellular structures visible, is removed from its scientific context and used as a painting material. It evokes themes of observation, examination and the attempt to make something visible that would otherwise remain unseen. However, as a plant-based colourant, hematein reacts to light, causing it to change, fade, and eventually disappear over time. The three canvases form a single work that reflects on life as a condition of continuous change. The title refers to a moment that is already in the process of becoming something else. A state that cannot be revisited.
