Röda Sten Art Gallery is located in an old boiler house that was built in 1940. At that time, the house served as a heating center for nearby industries. In the boiler house, the fire was made with coal and wood chips, which were stored in the large containers that remain in the roof on the second floor. The heating plant was closed in 1957, in connection with the closure of the sugar mill's operations.
Inside and outside the house you can see traces of the rave parties of the 1980s and 90s and the graffiti painters who lived in the building after the heating plant was shut down.
In the early 1990s, Röda Sten Art Gallery was threatened with demolition. A petition was started by a group of people who came together and formed an association to save the house. The association was heard and started an ongoing operation in 1996 with several exhibitions and performances a year. The house was completely renovated in 2000 to the condition it is in today.
Even today, it is the non-profit Röda Sten Kulturförening that runs the activities at Röda Sten Konsthall. Click here to read more about Röda Sten Kulturförening
