The cycle consists of 30 paintings, the beginning of which was an artist-diary filled in 2020. In it, the artist depicted a variety of animals that were rarely seen in their natural environment – mostly in zoos in Berlin and other large European cities. This artist-diary became the first impulse of the cycle. The cycle is created without using preliminary sketches, relying on intuition and layers intertwining on the canvas, creating a unique, unexpected play, unforeseen repetitions.
In 2021, working as a wall painting restorer in Kaunas, restoring a particularly poorly preserved 17th-century fresco, the artist’s style was formed – the small strokes on canvas, which repeated the retouching used in the restoration of wall paintings.
In the works of the Savanna cycle, the artist plays with familiar shapes and colours, depicting familiar or semi-familiar forms of savanna animals and their environment in a childlike manner, thus creating a kind of scenography in which every visitor of the gallery is invited to take a walk.
