Artist group VEDELIK
VUPLI EXHIBITION
03.07– 20.08.2023
Gallery Metropol 6m2 and Metropol Kapp
Vana-Kalamaja 46, Tallinn
Opening event and fashion show on Monday, July 3 at 7 PM
We invite You to visit the VEDELIK (liquid in English) Vupli (special kind of underwear in estonian) exhibition in galleries Metropol 6m2 and Metropol Kapp!
Is it handicraft, audio-video art, or some technique made with a brush and scissors? Knitting, cutting, painting, installing, crocheting, needlepointing, trimming or photography?
Samples of a specific type, i.e. industrially produced underwear (100% cotton) directly from the knitwear factory A/S LOKSA ELTA, have been transformed into works of art by the diligent hands of members of VEDELIK artist group and invited guests. There will be a fashion show, a presentation of works and a laundry-lottery called “Let’s start the week with clean underwear!”.
First exposure to underwear takes us to the cradle of human history. The prototype of panties was undoubtedly the fig leaf in Eva’s hand. But only little more than a century ago, panties were a great shame under skirt of a country woman and it was taboo to even talk about them. We have now reached era of cyber panties, the electronic biosensor sewn into the fabric and in constant contact with the surface of the skin that measures blood pressure, pulse and other parameters of the wearer.
This kind of exhibition is a very bold step, as in the past just washing and drying the pants was done in secrecy. They were placed to dry on the back lines behind the other clothes so that no one could see them. The use of pants was kept in secret for a long time, even the word was taboo. When going to the seamstress, the word “panty fabric” was avoided and “that one is for those”.
The meritorious and productive artist group VEDELIK, which has been active in the Estonian art scene for a long time, consists of a large number of more or less well-known artists, and also important is the fact that the participants of this exhibition are bound by an indelible love for art and colorful laundry!
To visit the exhibitions after the opening, ring the doorbell or, even better, inform us in advance of your desire to visit by calling 5217649 or 53750662 or send a message on social media.
Please note that large-scale repair work is underway on Vana-Kalamaja street, which may slow down the journey to us in different ways.
You are warmly welcome!
