Exhibition “The force that through the green fuse drives the flower” by Nele Kurvits and Sofia Fattahhova will be open in Vana-Võromaa Kultuurikoda from 7.07–19.08.2023.
In a way, making art is the same as cultivating a garden – in both cases, outcome and profitability are unpredictable. We have chosen methods and techniques that are not reliable. Weaving beans into fabric may cause it to mould, or the plants may die. Anthotype images may fade and disappear by the end of the exhibition.
Large files are sent in seconds, and flying over the ocean takes less than a day, but when threads are put on the loom, weaving a rug takes just as long as it did 200 years ago.
It takes time to formulate an idea or come to a realisation. Experimenting needs space, time, and freedom to wander. Experimenting means that the outcome is important but unknown. Only time will tell.
Nele Kurvits (1997) is looking for ways to live a human-pace life in a hyper-capitalist society, using slow and forgotten, archaic and wild techniques in her work. Combining textile, metalwork, fashion and photography, Kurvits relies on her studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design.
Sofia Fattahhova (1997) playfully and painfully reflects on questions of identity. In her works, Fattahhova combines craftsmanship with trickery and clear lines with incomprehensibility. Fattahhova has studied Sculpture and Installation (BA) at the Estonian Academy of Arts and is currently studying Contemporary Art (MA) at the same school.
The exhibition is open from 7 July to 19 August.
