The exhibition shows the early history of Marimekko with hand-printed Marimekko fabrics and clothing from the first patterns up to 1975. Produced by freelance writer Maria Jernkvist who writes and lectures on textile history, it is Maria's private collection of Marimekko fabrics and vintage clothing that is displayed in the exhibition with over 100 patterns by Maija Isola. The pattern world that Maija Isola created changed the interior design ideal in the 1950s. With roots in folk art, her designs contain both a dynamic geometry and winding ornamentation.
The exhibition also shows patterns and fashion from iconic designers such as Vuokko Eskolin Nurmesniemi and Annika Rimala.
Marimekko was founded in 1951 in Finland by designer Armi Ratia. In 2021, the company celebrated 70 years. Marimekko’s abstractly patterned, comfortable dresses became a contrast to the tight and restrictive fashion of the time. The future US First Lady Jackie Kennedy is portrayed on the cover of the December issue of Sports Illustrated in 1960 wearing a Marimekko dress and the brand became an international sensation. Marimekko has since then continued to add color not only to our clothes but also to our homes. Welcome to a pattern party bursting with color and joy!
