Stockholm Art is responsible for the city's art collection. A selection of the art purchases made in the years 2021 and 2022 is displayed at Liljevalchs +.
Through a mixture of materials, techniques and expression, Stockholm art offers a visual adventure where the distinctive features are more important than the similarities. The city of Stockholm began acquiring art more than a hundred years ago. It is one of Sweden’s largest art collections in public ownership, a collection that is constantly growing.
Today it consists of roughly 32,000 works and includes paintings, graphics, watercolours, drawings, photography, sculptures and objects. As a whole, the city’s art collection is exactly what it should be: sprawling, idiosyncratic, dynamic and independent. Sometimes it reflects current art trends. Sometimes it represents precisely that which deviates in some way. It is always marked by great art historical value as a witness of the times.
The common feature of the selection in the presentation at Liljevalchs+ is that the works were purchased during 2021–2022 and were created by artists active today. However, they come from different generations, create in different techniques and seek different expressions. In each other’s company, their artworks represent more peculiarities than similarities.
