The installation by Rebeca Žukovitš and Marion Selgall explores themes of care and abandonment. Through traditional folk song types “The Daughter Slayer” and “Daughter To The Water!”, the exhibition examines the position of women as daughters who grow up in secret and unpreferred. The exhibition creates a dialogue between folk songs and Christian tradition, inviting the audience to reflect on how the values of communities that historically favored sons, values recorded in folk songs from 100 to 200 years ago, are still reflected in modern society.
Rebeca Žukovitš (b. 1999) is a multimedia artist and composer who, through video, animation, and installation explores the intersections of body, identity, and digital space. Her work focuses on the politics of gaze in the digital age and the tensions between analogue and digital realities. Drawing inspiration from medieval philosophy and biblical narratives, Žukovitš addresses themes of identity, perception, corporeality, and gender. Experimenting with a glitched self-portraiture, Žukovitš investigates fluid identities, body dysmorphia and the feeling of disorientation. She frequently incorporates text and the human voice. Rebeca Žukovitš has studied audiovisual composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and media art at KASK & Conservatorium / School of Arts Gent. Her works have been screened and exhibited in Estonia, Belgium, Italy, Spain and France.
Marion Selgall (b. 1982) is a folk musician and vocal teacher who brings the ancient world of traditional songs into the present day. While preserving traditions is central to her work, she is also fascinated by exploring how and with what means folk songs can be reimagined in a contemporary context. Selgall holds a degree in folk singing from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and a degree in Estonian and comparative folklore from the University of Tartu. She leads various communal singing events and teaches folk singing at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, in the singing group of the folk culture society Leigarid, and to private students. She is a member of the ensembles The Baltic Sisters, Näkken, Tallinna Naesed, and 6hunesseq, with whom she has performed in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Switzerland, and Germany.
