Daria Trofimova is a Kazakhstan-born artist based in Riga whose recent work explores themes closely connected to Alexei Gordin’s artistic practice: the aesthetics of abandoned spaces and their relationship to geopolitical change, the physical and psychological experience of abandonment, and the absurd performativity of space.
One of the central concerns shared by both artists is the fragility and impermanence of art itself. In this exhibition, this idea is expressed primarily through the chosen materials—for example, the metal frames of Alexei Gordin’s photographs have been treated with acid, causing them to gradually erode over the course of the exhibition.
For this exhibition, the artists have collaboratively created an installation composed of abandoned objects and discarded furniture, creating an intriguing contrast with Okapi Gallery’s white cube exhibition space. Both artists also present experimental photographic works printed on concrete and fabric, as well as graffiti. The exhibition is a creative experiment in which two artists, intuitively attuned to one another, construct a spatial installation based on shared narratives while exploring them through their own personal, geographical, and cultural perspectives.
