Piret Uibotalu
ALLEY OF BROKEN HEARTS
November 19 – December 18, 2022
Gallery Metropol
Opening event on November 19 at 6 PM
In the uneasily dark and thundering late autumn, there is a place in the city of Tallinn where you can just be quiet. This time in Metropol artspace, you can find a soulful cardiogram and it’s glass curves show both gloom and hope.
The artist introduces her installation:
This work was born from the need to express a feeling that has accumulated in me over a few years. Devastation of nature, corona pandemic, closure, war – the pain, sadness accompanying all of the above, the world becoming not black or white anymore, but red. Life has become fragile and delicate – at any moment it can break into pieces, regardless of us, ordinary people. So many broken hearts around us. Young, old, prominent and unknown, near and far. So much so that they could grow into high, long, endless alleys – alleys of broken hearts. They sprout from the black soil of a changed world, head for heights and proliferate, multiply and transform. Looking inwards will reveal the condition of your heart.
And next summer, this pain will be reminded again by the arching tufts of white and pink splithearts or mother’shearts or brokenhearts flourishing in the gardens.
Piret Uibotalu (b. 1968) has studied glass art, sculpture and art pedagogy. She creates works of art from different materials, which are motivated by hope and hopelessness in life itself. The themes are the expectation of beauty and wonder, playfulness, bottomless reflections, thought-provoking states of mind, a new perspective on simple things. The materials are provided by nature, the rural environment and an inventive mind. Recycling is very important to her, as well as movement. A view from afar, yet up close, and certainly from the inside. Piret belongs to the Association of Estonian Glass Artists, the Association of Estonian Sculptors and is an active art teacher.
