DOPPLER EFFECT
(photo, text, video, installation)
May 11 – May 21, 2025
Gallery Metropol 6 m2 and Metropol Cabinet
(Vana-Kalamaja 46, Tallinn)
Exhibition is open by appointment, artists are present on May 11-12.
Once again the spring is blooming around us, books are being printed and in gallery Metropol we are
reminded how close physics, philosophy and art-making actually are with one another.
The purpose of everything is just to make sense of the world and ourselves. Nothing matters, and that’s why everything is so meaningful.
The project’s starting point has been the Doppler effect, which Petja picked up from a movie which he was watching last autumn.
Doppler effect is the change in the frequency of a wave in relation to an
observer who is moving relative to the source of the wave. Usually it’s explained through sound wave
examples, e.g. ambulance driving past you on the street with sirens on, but it applies to every form of a wave, for example light waves.
This exhibition is a playful co-operation, ”artistic research about the universe”.
The installative artwork consists of personal photography archive material, performative
self-portraits, interviews with physicist, texts, and AI-generated photos and video work.
In cabinet gallery there is an additional site-specific light-installation piece.
More important than the actual result is the creating process of the connections and
comments by interlacing the “waves” of the project.
Artists feel that their methods of working, and the indisciplinity of their work resonates with the Doppler effect-title and they are exited to
present it in the unconventional atmosphere of Metropol gallery.
Project is accompanied by a publication by Helsinki-based Utu Press (www.utupress.fi, IG @utu.painaa). It will be available in Fair Enough book fair (www.etdm.ee/en/sundmused/fair-enough-art-book-fair , IG @fairenough_bookfair) in Tallinn Disain Museum, 10-11th of May and in Metropol during the
exhibition.
Petja and Ronja are both photographic artists (b. 1997, FIN), working also with video and text. Their
previous works have a lot of similarities with each other, for example autobiographicality and
performativity. Doppler effect is their first co-operation.
