Patrik Berg (b. 1982 in Härnösand, Sweden, lives and works in Oslo) works mainly with drawing and graphics. As a graphic artist, he has a complex artistic practice, linked to traditions from Albrecht Dürer and Henry Darger. Berg asks questions about ecology, ornaments and the origin of the language. Erling Valtyrson (b. 1955 in Ålesund, lives and works on Askøy outside Bergen) is known as a Nordic mezzotint master, with both a modern imagery and more classic motifs in his production. This is the first time the two graphic artists have exhibited together.

It is now five years since Valtyrson had an exhibition in the Kunstverket gallery. On this occasion, he has put together images for an exhibition he himself believes are representative together with Berg’s graphic production, including several mezzo-tints in a somewhat larger format than before and where some motifs have also taken a completely new direction. Valtyrson himself says that: «it will be nice with Patrik in the showroom. A graphic designer I value highly. Two generations of graphics. Patrik has what I call a sensitive eye for the graphic, and it’s just something you have and something you do not acquire. “
For Patrik Berg, the process starts with an intuitive drawing directly on the copper plates. In some works, he has “decorated” with sugar aquatint and printed everything himself in small editions, but at the same time believes that it will be best when it does not feel completely like it is only he who has made the finished art. Although Berg works in a figurative tradition, he is probably more concerned with the abstract qualities of the image. Berg writes himself”I was very happy when Erling asked me to exhibit together, thinking there will be a very nice dynamic in the exhibition with Erling’s dark and exact mezzotint set up against my slightly lighter and expressionist landscape settings. What I can see as a common denominator is that we work with atmosphere and composition within a classical art-graphic tradition. I will show a selection of etchings from recent years. The theme is landscape, time and atmosphere. “
