Patricia Rodas (b.1972) maps the experiences of domestic violence and the traces left by them in her art. In Rodas’s pictures, you can see threatening elements, and on the other hand, something that wraps around you like a protective embrace.
Repetition is an important element in Rodas’ work. Another experience – be it positive or negative – is anchored in the human body. Rodas explores this body experience through the subjects and landscapes he describes, equating them to the repetition of violent experiences.
Rodas also wants to highlight healing from experiences of violence, which is often a lifelong process. He describes the different stages of healing, which proceed according to their own laws instead of in a linear order. Healing can be like a black hole that sucks a person into it, amidst the chaos of unprocessed emotions, tearing everything apart. But equally, a person may unexpectedly emerge from the darkness even stronger.
