Traces left by us and traces left in us

People, moments, places leave a mark, and time leaves a mark. The artists have left their mark in different forms of creation – Orest’s paintings and Jaana’s ceramics.
“Life itself has left the biggest mark on creation – days and nights, seasons, people, traditions, children, nature and everything else,” says painter Orest Kormašov.
Ceramicist Jaana Kormašov adds that “even in the case of the more difficult traces that life leaves on you, you must not lose your childishness and joy”. This attitude towards life is also reflected in his works.
Ceramicist Jaana Kormašov was a lecturer at Tallinn University’s Institute of Arts for 20 years. In the early 1990s, while studying to be a ceramicist at the Estonian National Art Institute, he also worked in the university library at the same time. There, he began to study the history of the Vikings and Native American peoples as a pastime, immersing himself in the world of pagan beliefs and folklore, and all this captivated him completely. Since then, his bowls and platters are born with their own “birthmarks” – they have upside-down boats, hoop crosses and gates – something for everyone and at the same time for everyone. Jaana believes that her ceramics protect people from everything bad. The artist has used high heat technology in the completion of his works. Jaana has said: “one thing’s for sure, I can’t live without clay!”
Orest Kormašov entered the Estonian National Art Institute in 1985, which he graduated in 1990 with a degree in painting. After graduating from the Institute of Arts, he worked as a lecturer and director of the Institute of Arts at Tallinn Pedagogical University. Orest has cultivated oil, tempera and watercolor paintings and works as an icon restorer in addition to painting.
