In the exhibition OMKVED, Ellen Karin Mæhlum shows graphic works with a focus on Norwegian forest nature. In this series, she has taken her experience of the forest as something rich, alive and mythical, but also terrifying and vulnerable. Nature provides room for the feeling of both belonging and alienation. There is enormous power in feeling insignificant out in nature, says Mæhlum.
Ellen Karin Mæhlum often works in series, series of pictures with a common theme, format and graphic technique. A common thread in her various projects is the focus on the changes in nature and the technical possibilities of graphics.
In the exhibition works OMKVED, she has further developed her techniques – which has resulted in distinctive, and almost painterly, graphic expressions. After several years of immersion in barren arctic island landscapes, she explores in this series the tensions and variations that can arise from the use of color – in interaction or contrast with other colors.
The title OMKVED , in the sense of repetitions or refrains, has been chosen based on the structure of the exhibition. Most of the works are made with the same printing plate. Displacements and mirror reversals of the motif, together with different blackenings, provide new content and create great variations. No two prints are the same.
