"A lake creature made from found materials, an experimental youth-centered space, a street art celebration, and a public outcry – these are just a few examples of events that took place as part of the Year of Youth Contemporary Art. On November 1st, an exhibition titled Notice-Think-Intervene?! will open at the Jakobi Gallery of the Tartu Children's Art School, summarizing a two-year creative and learning process."
How can one sum up a two-year journey through nine locations around South Estonia? How can an exhibition bring together fire sculptures, street art, concerns about the environment, youth mental health, and the desire for a personal space in the city? The exhibition Notice-Think-Intervene?! offers visitors insights into interventions created by young people during the Year of Contemporary Art.
Since March 2023, more than thirty young people from across Estonia have come together to collectively explore, reflect on, and learn whether and how art can serve as a tool to strengthen communities. Inspiring explorations, camps, conversations, and wanderings with artists and creators, team-building, collaborative idea development, and finding answers to various organizational challenges filled the Year of Contemporary Art with meaningful experiences for the youth.
Each young person chose one of the nine locations involved in the project that resonated with them the most and, together with their team, created an artwork in connection with that place. All interventions were created in dialogue with local communities. The exhibition can document only a small portion of what took place. Visitors can explore the nine interventions, along with the emotions, memories, and photos of the young participants. Where possible, parts of the original works are on display. Each location is accompanied by a creative task that can be completed in the exhibition space.
Notice-Think-Intervene?! is part of the Year of Contemporary Art for Youth education project and is included in the core program of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024.
