We are separated from ourselves and others, but we have a strong need to connect. How do we connect with others and feel free when we don’t even know ourselves and constantly act the parts of others? We take on the roles that we have learned at home and school, and that society reflects on us. But who are we, really? Who are we within these frameworks?
We need connection. We need to connect with ourselves and each other. We yearn for that connection. DNA creates us and we create our DNA. Why reproduce pain and isolation when you can create beauty and authenticity? It’s time to step out of these frames and face ourselves in a mirror.
The artists add: “We have a habit of escaping into alcohol, blaming each other, emotional eating, overworking, over-exercising, dysfunctional relationships, shopping, pornography etc. It is time to ask: why have we created such a world where it is painful to exist and we need to run away from ourselves and fight with each other? We need to understand which frameworks we have grown up in, and which of them are actually fake and which are real.”
Margus Kontus (b. 1987) graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a degree in graphics (BA) and contemporary art (MA). He has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in Estonia and abroad. Margus’s artistic practice is characterised by a wide spectrum of experimental works, from paintings made with magnetic fields to energy-producing sculpture. His works are like tiny meditations to make sense of existence. Why we exist has haunted Margus for a long time and has definitely left a mark on his work.
